Painting by Júlio Pomar at the Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar
From 5 July, the Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar is hosting the exhibition Os livros de Júlio Pomar. Itinerância da leitura, escrita, pintura [The books of Júlio Pomar. A journey of reading, writing, painting], curated by art historian and curator Mariana Pinto dos Santos. This exhibition examines the artist’s relationship with literature, which strongly influenced his art – as well as having regularly painted literary works, Júlio Pomar designed several book covers during his artistic career.
The exhibition includes books, paintings and drawings, as well as excerpts of works that relate to his work, incorporated into the space by the artist Horácio Frutuoso. On display are some of the books that inspired Júlio Pomar, those he painted, his own writing and the artist books he published. In addition to these pieces, there are also some previously unseen works by Pomar.
The CAM is collaborating on this project through the loan of the painting Almada I, which portrays José de Almada Negreiros, a multidisciplinary artist who devoted himself to both the visual arts and writing. During his career, Júlio Pomar made another two paintings of Almada – Almada II and Almada III – as well as depicting many other figures from Portuguese culture, such as Fernando Pessoa, Luís de Camões, Mário de Sá Carneiro, Santa-Rita Pintor and Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso.
The exhibition can be visited until 10 October and will have a catalogue with texts by various authors.
