Marking the centenary of Nadir Afonso
On 4 December 2020, in the Nadir Afonso Contemporary Art Museum, in Chaves, the exhibition Nadir Afonso. Entre o local e o global [Nadir Afonso. Between local and global] opened to commemorate the centenary of the artist’s birth. Presented in various phases, this exhibition, curated by Maria do Mar Fazenda, will last for one year, closing in December 2021.
From 11 September, 20 works from the CAM Collection join this initiative, including five paintings and a print by Nadir Afonso. This is the third exhibition phase of the programme, which shows works by the artist belonging to the collection of the municipality of Chaves and the Nadir Afonso Foundation, along with pieces from other institutions.
The exhibition will also display a selection of pieces by other artists who influenced Nadir Afonso in his career. Accordingly, the CAM is also loaning six oils by Dordio Gomes, two canvases and a drawing by Júlio Pomar and five paintings by Júlio Resende, three names that were significant in the artist’s career during his training period in Porto.
Nadir Afonso. Entre o local e o global is guided by a text written by Nadir Afonso in 2007 to the Jornal de Letras, Artes e Ideias, entitled ‘Local and Global,’ which was the starting point for a more wide-ranging programme that includes other exhibitions, conferences, workshops, visits and meetings relating to the artist’s work.
