Luisa Cunha in the MAAT
Hello! Are you there? is the title of the first retrospective exhibition of the work of Luisa Cunha (Lisbon, 1949). Curated by Isabel Carlos, former director of the CAM – Gulbenkian Modern Art Centre, it has been organised in the wake of the EDP Art Grand Prize, which Luisa Cunha won in 2021, and charts her artistic career from 1992 to 2022.
The exhibition occupies part of the Central building and the Garden and includes works encompassing a range of mediums and techniques. It invites the visitor to become immersed in the artist’s oeuvre, to find artworks in unexpected places, and to be surprised by the artist’s own voice as well as other unusual sounds.
One of the pieces shown is Hello!, from the CAM Collection, an installation composed of speakers mounted in toilet cubicles, which every 12 seconds emit the following text: ‘Are you there? Can you hear me? Hello?’ All the mirrors over the sinks are covered with brown Kraft paper.
The opening of the exhibition is accompanied by the launch of a catalogue of the artist’s work, which includes more than 108 pieces and excerpts from a selection of texts by various authors, as well as original essays by curator Isabel Carlos and the North American historian and art critic Joshua Decter.
