‘Heroínas das Artes’, a new children’s book collection
Catarina Sobral is the author and illustrator who conceived the first number of this collection entitled ‘Irrequieta, Madalena Perdigão’.
CAM and Tinta-da-china joined to create the children’s book collection ‘Heroínas das Artes’, a collection of books for everyone who believes that heroines exist. Based on the modern and contemporary art collection of CAM – Centro de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian, this collection tells stories about brave, adventurous, daring and fearless women who, through art, transform the world.
The first number of this collection is dedicated to the figure of Madalena Perdigão, a remarkable woman on the Portuguese cultural scene, creator of Gulbenkian Choir, Orchestra and Ballet in the 1960s. Later, in 1984, she created ACARTE – Serviço de Animação, Criação Artística e Educação pela Arte and CAI – Centro Artístico Infantil at Gulbenkian Foundation, shortly after CAM opened in 1983.
Catarina Sobral (Coimbra, 1985), author and illustrator of children’s books, was invited to conceive the first three numbers of this collection, dedicated to Madalena Perdigão, and to the artists of the CAM Collection, Ana Hatherly and Helena Almeida, with launches in 2024.
‘Irrequieta, Madalena Perdigão’ is her 20th book. She has published illustrated books in more than fifteen languages, and has won dozens of prizes.
On the 1st of June, International Children’s Day, the first number will be launched at the Lisbon Book Fair. It will be presented by Guilherme d’Oliveira Martins, executive director of the Gulbenkian Foundation, followed by a reading from the book by the author and an autograph session.
