Henry Moore is one of the artists under the spotlight in Catalonia
Having opened in October, ‘Arte en piedra’ [Art in Stone], which includes a sculpture from the CAM Collection, is on display at the Fundació Catalunya la Pedrera, in Barcelona, until 2 February 2025. Curated by the former director of the Gulbenkian Museums, Penelope Curtis, the exhibition celebrates the stone structure of Casa Milà, also known as La Pedrera.
The exhibition is divided in two sections, the first of which unfolds inside this building designed by Antoní Gaudi and features the work of eight prominent sculptors from the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century: Hans Arp, Louise Bourgeois, Eduardo Chillida, Naum Gabo, Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, Isamu Noguchi and Jorge Oteiza. The second part is devoted to a younger generation of sculptors, including Cristina Iglesias and Anish Kapoor.
At the start of the exhibition route, in the section entitled ‘In search of forms,’ we find the work ‘Animal Carving’, of the CAM Collection, by the renowned English artist Henry Moore (1898-1986). This pink marble sculpture, made in 1974, is shown alongside two works by Barbara Hepworth and explores the similarities between the oeuvre of these two contemporary artists and their work processes.
The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue featuring essays on each of the sculptors represented, as well as reproductions of all the works on display, not just sculptural works but also the drawings and prints that complete the exhibition.
