Lugar do Desenho was created to fulfil the desire of the artist Júlio Resende (1917-2011) to preserve and exhibit his drawn works. The programme of the Fundação Júlio Resende, in Gondomar, is guided by the artist’s intention and regularly presents his drawings, both from its own collection and from other institutions, as is the case with this exhibition.

Having opened at the end of last month, the exhibition 61 Obras de Resende da Coleção do CAM (61 Works by Resende from the CAM Collection) is entirely devoted to the significant body of Júlio Resende’s work held by CAM. Of the 75 pieces in the Collection, 61 were selected for the way they reflect the evolution, over more than 40 years of work, of one of the great names in Portuguese neorealism. Dating from between the 1940s and the 1980s, most of the works on display are prints and drawings, with some paintings, with the human figure a constant presence throughout.

Some of the works in the exhibition, such as Resende’s portraits of José Régio and Miguel Torga, have not been shown for decades, making this the perfect opportunity to revisit the artist’s role in twentieth-century art and reflect on the echo of his presence today.
