The building, redesigned by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma (KKAA) in collaboration with Portuguese studio OODA (Oporto Office for Design and Architecture), is part of a project that establishes a greater connection between the building and the wider Gulbenkian Garden area, proposing a holistic integration of all the elements of the landscape. Landscape architect Vladimir Djurovic (VDLA studio) was responsible for designing this new garden area and is also honoured with the award.

Kengo Kuma was inspired by the Engawa typology, a space protected by the eaves of the roof, which is not entirely inside or outside and is often found in traditional Japanese houses. The Engawa concept is reflected in various features of the building, from the design of new exhibition spaces to the opening of various access points, underlining the idea of CAM as an open and accessible art centre where everyone is encouraged to make it their own.

Among the 15 ArchDaily award winners, CAM is the only building to be honoured in Portugal, alongside projects from China, Saudi Arabia, India, France and others. This award annually celebrates the best and most innovative architectural works from around the world. The winners are chosen through a public vote, allowing architectural professionals from all over the world to take part in the selection.
