Almada Negreiros and Sonia Delaunay at the Pavilhão Branco
Opened on 8 April, the exhibition Entretecido | Interlace, taking place at the Pavilhão Branco, brings together 26 artists with links to textile art. Curated by Tobi Maier, director of Lisbon Municipal Galleries, the exhibition features works in various formats and media, including performance, photography and film.
The Modern Art Centre has participated in this project by lending five works by José de Almada Negreiros and Sonia Delaunay, both multifaceted artists who devoted a significant portion of their artistic careers to costume design for dance and theatre.
The three lithographs by Sonia Delaunay loaned for the exhibition are based on drawings from 1923, made after Tristan Tzara invited the artist to design the costumes for his play Le Coeur à Gaz [The Gas Heart], written in 1921. In 1977, the French publisher Jacques Damase published Tristan Tzara’s text together with the lithographs by Sonia Delaunay.
The two gouaches by Almada loaned to the exhibition feature ballet costumes designed in 1918. In one of them, Almada displays the costume for the Devil character in the ballet A Princesa dos Sapatos de Ferro [The Princess of the Iron Shoes], a character that the artist himself played at the São Carlos Theatre. The second is probably a costume for the ballet A Lenda d’Ignez [The Legend of Ignez], which was never performed.
Spanning two floors, the exhibition features some new works, specifically created for this project, and can be visited until 6 June 2021.
