Location
Studio Centro de Arte Moderna GulbenkianOn the opening of ‘Testimonium’, Jacob Kirkegaard presents a new performance that brings together composition with real sounds from waste and instrumental improvisation, extending the sonic and conceptual approach of the installation into the performative space. The performance also incorporates a visual component, featuring footage recorded at Valorsul’s waste management infrastructures across the city of Lisbon, reinforcing the project’s exploratory and sensory dimension.
On stage, Kirkegaard is joined, on flutes, by Clara Saleiro, who bridges contemporary music, improvisation, and performance, exploring the flute through extended techniques and a refined attention to breath and timbre. Her contribution seeks to capture underlying prolonged tonalities, overtones and undertones hidden within waste flows, revealing continuous, subtle layers of sound embedded in matter in circulation.
The performance unfolds as a dialogue between field recordings, winds, and strings. Subtle compositional structures and improvised gestures shape a soundscape in constant transformation, oscillating between the intimate and the expansive, and inviting the audience into an experience of focused and attentive listening on waste and its musicality.
This performance will be preceded by a conversation between Jacob Kirkegaard and Raquel Castro.

Jacob Kirkegaard
Jacob Kirkegaard (Denmark, 1975) is a sound artist who explores ways to reflect on complex, unnoticed or unapproachable conditions and environments. His works have treated themes such as radioactivity in Chernobyl, melting ice in the Arctic, border walls in global and metaphorical contexts, immersive acoustic explorations into global waste management, and processes related to when a human being dies.
Since 2006 Kirkegaard has also been extensively researching, recording and creating works using otoacoustic emissions; tones generated from the actual human ear. The core element and method of Jacob Kirkegaard’s work derive from the use of sound recordings of the tangible aspects from its intangible themes. -
