Studio Centro de Arte Moderna GulbenkianFungi are an inexhaustible source of inspiration for transformation: from the way we move through different notions of time to how we rethink death.
This lecture delves into the question of how we might organise ourselves like a mycelium – the subterranean fungal network. It focuses specifically on mycorrhizal networks that establish symbiotic relationships with other entities to exchange resources.
What might this kind of relationship look like in our daily human lives when we work in collectives or in collaboration with other species? How can we expand them to create more balanced and equitable methodologies and connections within creative communities?
These are some of the questions addressed by researcher and curator Yasmine Ostendorf-Rodríguez throughout this gathering – a journey through the mycelium and its infinite possibilities.
The event is part of the programme of the ‘Institution(ing)s’ project, a consortium of European arts organisations that seeks to create a framework for instituting an emerging social vision, as well as to test and share innovative methodologies applied to art institutions.
This event will be presented in English with simultaneous translation to Portuguese.
‘Institution(ing)s’ is funded by the European Union. Views and opinions expressed are however those of the author(s) only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or Creative Europe. Neither the European Union nor the granting authority can be held responsible for them.

Yasmine Ostendorf-Rodríguez
Yasmine Ostendorf-Rodríguez is interested in exploring the application of a mycological lens in defining fair models of collaboration and (self) organization. Her book, ‘Let’s Become Fungal! Mycelium Teachings and the Arts,’ shares twelve teachings of the world of fungi. She is the founder of the Green Art Lab Alliance – a network of 70 art organizations across Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean and Asia. The mission of the alliance is to foster relationships that contribute to social and environmental justice, akin to the interconnected nature of mycelium.
