Studio Centro de Arte Moderna GulbenkianIn this talk, different modes of belonging and coexistence, and of activating memory/ies, will be questioned. Julianknxx will be joined by the curator and filmmaker of Guinean origin Jesualdo Lopes, the actor and writer of Angolan origin Paulo Pascoal, the Angolan visual artist Rafael de Oliveira, and the Mozambican singer Selma Uamusse.
The artist and the team of curators who came together to expand the project in the local context will talk about the core themes of the exhibition and the concepts that originated this programme, structuring it into three distinct moments: past, present and future.
The team will present the events and participants that make up the programme, while reflecting on the exchanges and connections established during the process of creating together.
This event will be presented in English with simultaneous translation and interpretation in Portuguese Sign Language.
Chorus in Rememory of Flight in Lisbon
For the exhibition ‘Julianknxx. Chorus in Rememory of Flight’, we brought together a curatorial team who, between February and May, will bring to the Gulbenkian Foundation and the city of Lisbon a programme of events that echo the themes of colonial heritage, loss and belonging.

Jesualdo Lopes (he/him) is a Bissau-Guinean/Lisbon artist living in London. He founded ‘The Blacker The Berry Project’ and leads creative, intersectional and inclusive initiatives for the Black queer community

Julianknxx
Julianknxx (b. Sierra Leone, 1987) is a poet, artist and filmmaker. The polyphonic nature of Julianknxx’s work is indicative of his expansive practice, which is rooted in poetry but extends into performance, film, music and sculpture. Julianknxx draws on his personal experiences to broaden perspectives on the history and culture of Africa and its diasporas. Inspired by oral history traditions and working with a distinctive aesthetic approach, his films invite us to consider how we construct both local and global narratives, while reflecting on how it feels to exist in liminal spaces.

Paulo Pascoal
Paulo Pascoal (b. Lisbon, 1982) is an actor and author with a professional career spanning more than twenty years in theatre, television, radio and cinema. His practice is crossed by activism, cultural politics and the performing arts, in a mission for balance, self-actualisation, acceptance and collectivity.

Rafael de Oliveira
Rafael de Oliveira aka oxyretronave (b. Angola, 1998) is a multidisciplinary visual artist from the Angolan diaspora who expresses his vision of the world through images. He was a member of the 23/24 CAM’s Youth Advisory Group.

Selma Uamusse
Selma Uamusse (b. Maputo, Mozambique, 1981) is a singer, author, songwriter, performer and occasional actress, who has been living in Portugal since 1988. Her debut album, ‘Mati’ (2018), which means ‘water’ in Changana (one of the three most spoken languages in Mozambique), was widely praised by national critics, having been presented on several prestigious national and international stages, on a tour with more than 60 concerts around the globe. Her most recent work ‘Liwoningo’ (2020), which means ‘light’ in chope languages, was produced by Grammy award winning producer Guilherme Kastrup.
