Engawa Space Centro de Arte Moderna GulbenkianJulianknxx (b. Sierra Leone, 1987) explores themes of heritage, loss and belonging through poetry, music and the visual arts. Living and working in London, Julianknxx uses his personal history to deconstruct dominant narratives about African art, history and culture.
‘Chorus in Rememory of Flight’ is a videoinstallation created by Julianknxx that will be presented at Engawa Space. The material collected in the nine cities where the artist collaborated has been brought together in an audiovisual installation that offers singing and music as a form of resistance.
The synergies established during his stay in Lisbon last year are brought together in this project, which has a parallel collaborative programme curated by Juliankxx, Jesualdo Lopes, Paulo Pascoal, Rafael de Oliveira and Selma Uamusse.
Project commissioned by the Barbican Centre, in London, and We Transfer in partnership with DE SINGEL and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

Julianknxx
Julianknxx (b. Sierra Leone, 1987) is a poet, artist and filmmaker. The polyphonic nature of Julianknxx’s work is indicative of his expansive practice, which is rooted in poetry but extends into performance, film, music and sculpture. Julianknxx draws on his personal experiences to broaden perspectives on the history and culture of Africa and its diasporas. Inspired by oral history traditions and working with a distinctive aesthetic approach, his films invite us to consider how we construct both local and global narratives, while reflecting on how it feels to exist in liminal spaces.
