Gustavo Ciríaco. Caravanserá

Open Residency Programme

Event Slider

Gustavo Ciríaco takes over the Engawa Space to create a sensory Carnival. Combining dance and the visual arts, 'Caravanserá' adopts the format of an open residency, with the artist present in the space to share the creative process with the public.

Gustavo Ciríaco (Rio de Janeiro, 1969) is a choreographer and transdisciplinary artist who works in dance and visual arts. His site-specific works explore relationships between space, geography, architecture, and fiction.

Inspired by the work of the Rio-born artist (and his mother), Maria José de Figueiredo Ciríaco (1939-2020), ‘Caravanserá’ takes its name from the age-old roadside inns along the Silk Road, in the deserts between the Middle East and Asia. Safe havens on a journey, the ‘caravanseras’ offered protection to long-distance travellers. Sculpture is the focal point of the dialogue between the artists, mother and son. Its tactile dimension and openness to change invites visitors to interact and become part of the creation.

Gustavo Ciríaco invites everyone to take part in workshops on dance, music, sewing and set design, culminating in a Carnival parade on 14 February in the South Garden.

Artist Gustavo Ciríaco invited Antônio Frederico Lasalvia, Chu‘o‘ng-Đài Võ, Laura Erber and Maša Tomšič to reflect on their artistic practice. Consult related information.
