Location
Engawa Space Centro de Arte Moderna GulbenkianCombining dance and the visual arts, ‘Caravanserá’ adopts the format of an open residency, with the artist present in the space to share the creative process with the public. The project will culminate in an urban and intergenerational carnival parade that celebrates coming together and sharing, inspired by the work of the artist and poet Maria José de Figueiredo Ciríaco.
Guided by Gustavo Ciríaco, ‘Complicity Among Strangers’ invites participants to experiment with the gestures and rhythms of carnival, in movements and interactions that transform into the collective composition for the ‘Caravanserá’ block.
Inspired by the spirit of festive pilgrimage and community that permeates the project, the practice allows each body to be simultaneously instrument and participant at the party, connecting presence, movement and improvisation.

Gustavo Ciríaco
Gustavo Ciríaco (Rio de Janeiro, 1969) is a Brazilian choreographer and transdisciplinary artist. His practice combines dance, visual arts and performance in site-specific projects that explore the relationships between body, space and imagination, in an ongoing investigation of presence, perception and the expanded art of dance.
He presents works and interventions in institutions, festivals and museums in Europe, Latin America, Asia and the Middle East. His work proposes sensitive experiences that activate space and the audience as a constitutive part of the work.
