Closure of the project – "Can we go in a new direction?"

Event Slider

Join us for the closing party of the ‘Can we go in a new direction?’ project by Gabriela Albergaria at the Square of the Fonte Nova Shopping Centre in Benfica.

‘Can we go in a new direction?’, the installation and question that artist Gabriela Albergaria poses to us, has underpinned rich and diverse programming in spaces of thought and action that counteract the rapid pace of our days and the voracity of consumption.

From March to July, this installation has become a space for meeting and sharing, a shelter for meaningful encounters, and a starting point for taking a more attentive look around us. Now that the project is coming to an end, we want to again dedicate some time to the creation of community, convinced that these kinds of spaces to talk, share, use our hands and recover small gestures of repair are essential to redesigning our wasteful society and creating small pockets of oxygen to break up the voracious pace of the city.

On July 16 we invite everyone to join us for two moments of sharing: an informal workshop with the Needle Club to learn varied techniques around fabrics, stitches and needles (knitting, crochet, sewing, patchwork, embroidery) and an evening of traditional European dances with Tradballs – Cooperative of Traditional Arts & Culture for those that are light on their feet.

Programme

15:30 – 17:30 / Sharing circle with the Needle Club

Direction: The Needle Club of Unisben – Intergenerational University of Benfica

Leading participants: Professor Maria José Cintrão, Alda Jesus Sepanas, Maria Elisabete Silva, Maria Manuela Garcia, Odete Gama

The Needle Club of the Intergenerational University of Benfica is meeting in a learning circle to share the secrets of sewing, knitting, crochet, embroidered tapestry and embroidery.

Based on the idea of transforming to donate, the Needle Club was born in 2011 as a way of creatively recovering leftover fabrics and clothes, giving them new lives and preventing them from becoming waste. Making new dresses from pillowcases, skirts and shorts from old shirts, the group organises an informal workshop to share techniques of reusing materials and giving them new life.

17:30 – 19:30 / Finissage Ball – traditional music and dance

DJ MATi@s with Tradballs – Cooperative for Traditional Arts & Culture

Passionate about traditional music and dance, DJ MATi@S presents a very varied programme of traditional European dances, presenting in his setlists the sounds of various works by national and foreign artists. It will be a different dance for everyone! "This is not Rock. This is not Pop. This is Folk & Roll!!"
