CAM’s British Art Collection

Twenty-four works from the CAM Collection travel to Casa das Histórias Paula Rego, in Cascais, for the exhibition CAM’s British Art Collection. This show reflects on the creation of this section of the collection and its relation to Paula Rego.

The exhibition CAM’s British Art Collection is the result of a partnership between the Fundação Dom Luís I and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, gathering 24 works by 16 British artists from the CAM Collection (including paintings, drawings and prints). The show, which takes place at Casa das Histórias Paula Rego, coincides with the largest ever retrospective exhibition of her work at the Tate Britain, in London, which will then travel to the European cities of The Hague and Málaga.

The works from the British Art Collection chosen for this exhibition reflect experimental approaches in the field of figuration by artists who, like Paula Rego, were mainly producing their work in London in the 1950s and 1960s and who became associated with the ‘School of London’ — a concept developed by the British Council for the international promotion of exhibitions that included works by some of the British artists presented here, such as Michael Andrews, Frank Auerbach, Leon Kossoff and David Hockney.

This exhibition will also feature a selection of works from the British Art Collection that were produced in the 1980s by artists such as Maggi Hambling, Steven Campbell and Peter Howson, which, for chronological reasons, do not belong to the specific context of the School of London, but are closely related to the figurative universe of Paula Rego. The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue with essays and texts about the artists and the works.
