Building the Collective Glossary, by Cindy Sissokho

Event Slider

This gathering will see Cindy Sissokho unfolds on her current research for the creation of an online glossary of the ‘Institution(ing)s’ project.

Today, the creation of a glossary is an exercise to complement and continue to build from the work of writers, linguists, cultural workers in understanding how the politics of language is deeply inscribed in the ways we work, live with one another and define culture(s).

As a digital platform, co-edited by Cindy Sissokho and Luísa Santos and designed by Denise Santos, the glossary will reflect and think through the coexistence of contemporary cultures with the ones that are either lost, erased, endangered as they continue to be persecuted and ought to be revived.

In this talk and reading session, Sissokho will, together with the participants, discuss what the concept of languages might mean beyond words: what are the languages we want to dismantle within our diverse vocabularies, or those we want to be loudly shared and acknowledged? what can it mean to restitute and repair through the usage of languages, long excluded within institutional spaces, but are today sometimes over-represented?

The curator and cultural producer also aims to foster a generous dialogue with the participants through a series of examples of things that have meanings to them. Like the glossary, this event seeks to provide an open platform for discussion to share knowledge that remains little known or unknown.

The event is part of the programme of the ‘Institution(ing)s’ project, a consortium of European arts organisations that seeks to create a framework for instituting an emerging social vision, as well as to test and share innovative methodologies applied to art institutions.

This event will be held in English.

‘Institution(ing)s’ is funded by the European Union. Views and opinions expressed are however those of the author(s) only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or Creative Europe. Neither the European Union nor the granting authority can be held responsible for them.
