Location
Studio Centro de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian‘Between Flesh and Seas’ focuses on the unique body of work by the Brazilian artist, drawing on footage collected over many years on locations that are deeply connected with her artistic narrative – from Inhotim, home to her permanent gallery, to Ouro Preto, Salvador and the Recôncavo region of Bahia, as well as Hong Kong, the United States and Portugal.
Employing a Direct Cinema style, directors Andrucha Waddington and Pedro Buarque de Hollanda unveil the creative process, the established connections, and the various references present in the work of Adriana Varejão.
The film is followed by a conversation with the artist, director Pedro Buarque de Hollanda and curator Victor Gorgulho.

Andrucha Waddington
Andrucha Waddington is a film and television director, producer and screenwriter. His credits include ‘Gêmeas’ (1999), with Fernanda Torres, ‘Eu, Tu, Eles’ (2000), Special Mention by the Un Certain Regard jury at the Cannes Film Festival, and ‘Casa de Areia’ (2005), official selection at the Berlin, Toronto and Sundance film festivals, and winner of the Sundance/ NHK International Filmmakers Script award. He is currently finalising the miniseries ‘Ângela Diniz – O Crime da Praia dos Ossos’ for the Max streaming platform. Waddington has been a partner in the production company Conspiração Filmes since 1995.

Pedro Buarque de Hollanda
Pedro Buarque de Hollanda is a producer, partner and chairman of the board of Conspiração, the independent production company with the most International Emmy nominations in the Americas. He has produced successful feature films such as ‘Vai Que Cola’ and ‘Dois Filhos de Francisco’, as well as the award-winning ‘Eu Tu Eles’ (Special Mention at the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival) and ‘Casa de Areia’ (Best Screenplay at the Sundance Film Festival). In 2024 he made his film directorial debut with the documentary ‘Adriana Varejão: Between Flesh and Oceans’, co-directed with Andrucha Waddington.
