Mathieu Copeland and FM Einheit revisit The Exhibition of a Dream, reflecting on the artistic trajectory of this exhibition, which transforms artists’ dreams into songs, and FM Einheit’s body of work.

During this conversation, Mathieu Copeland, curator of The Exhibition of a Dream, and FM Einheit, who composed and performed the songs based on the dreams of sixteen artists, will revisit the exhibition’s second incarnation since its premiere in Paris in 2017 and reflect on FM Einheit’s artistic trajectory and body of work.

Conceived as a record, The Exhibition of a Dream comprises sixteen dreams interpreted as songs, performed within otherwise empty galleries and following the temporary, evolving forms of mandalas. Drawing direct inspiration from the dreams of filmmakers, playwrights, poets and writers, these sonic compositions unfold over time, tracing patterns that are both fleeting and deliberately constructed.

FM Einheit was invited to take hold of this body of dreams and set it to music. Following initial demos sketched in his Steinschlag studio in Bavaria, FM Einheit collaborated with musicians Volker Kamp, Robert Poss, Susan Stenger, Erika Stucky, Saskia von Klitzing, and the singers of the Gulbenkian Choir. The dream interpretations were recorded live in 2017, both publicly and privately, in the Gulbenkian Foundation’s two amphitheatres in Lisbon: the Open-Air Amphitheatre and the Grand Auditorium. Underscoring the complex beauty inherent in the genesis of a dream, an experience shared within our inner worlds, the exhibition explores what it means to create mental images in the minds of those experiencing these dreams, opening them to new interpretations.

This conversation will be conducted in English, with simultaneous interpretation into Brazilian Portuguese. The session will also include interpretation in Portuguese Sign Language.
