This piece was originally part of a set of seven works Wallinger made of different locations in his secondary school, in which he sought to represent a common collective experience. Like the other works in the series, this image follows the rule of linear perspective, in which the vanishing point is signalled by the electric bulb, whose radiation is an integral part of the work. Based on the perspectival layout and with the integration of the central light into our perception, the drawing emphasises the rigidity and surveillance that dominates the school institution. Through apparently cold and distanced expression, Wallinger conjures up ghosts from the memory of his personal experiences, socially reflected in the construction of a collective consciousness and memory.
