Dream Up is the percussion quartet of Tomas Fujiwara, one of the most active, ubiquitous and creative figures in New York jazz.
A frequent collaborator of Taylor Ho Bynum, Mary Halvorson and Tomeka Reid, Fujiwara now explores a shared percussive sound with Kaoru Watanabe, Ches Smith and Kweku Sumbry, broad enough to include vibraphone, the African ngoni and the Japanese shinobue flute.
For Jazz Trail, Fujiwara’s pieces build “a bridge between Max Roach’s M’Boom percussion ensemble and the vibraphone gems recorded by Bobby Hutcherson for Blue Note in the 1960s and 70s”. The same review praises Fujiwara’s “rhythmic intelligence, dazzling virtuosity and fearless imagination”, both honouring diverse traditions and seeking an innovative perspective.
