One of the most inventive composers of improvised Portuguese music, Susana Santos Silva has become a prominent name on the European scene in recent years, frequently requested to join projects led by musicians such as Anthony Braxton, Fred Frith, Mats Gustafsson, Hamid Drake and Hedvig Mollestad. Alongside duos with Kaja Draksler and Torbjörn Zetterberg, from the quartet Hearth, and groups in which she explores her compositions, Santos Silva has had a fascinating solo career in which her unpredictable trumpet combines with sound collage, field recordings, video and electronic elements. In her latest and notable solo piece, All the Birds and a Telephone Ringing, she is guided by the theories and diktats of John Cage.
