Lucas Niggli is no stranger to the history of Jazz em Agosto, having passed through the festival as part of the explosive trio Steamboat Switzerland. But if the imaginative drummer has spread his fire through numerous projects and collaborations (especially with Barry Guy), the path he has chosen for the group Sound of Serendipity, published by the discerning Intakt Records, is a revelation: Niggli summons this decathet for a composition operated by a game of cards, always on the border between written music and improvisation, always on a knife edge. It’s a torrential source of originality, unpredictable, fuelled by the Swiss national team dedicated to improvisation. The drums lead the way, without fear of groove, and flute, voice, accordion, tuba and organ orbit around Niggli in a spectacular whirlwind.
