Released in 2024, Run the Gauntlet marked Kris Davis’ return to trio recordings, after a period in which she devoted herself mainly to the variable ensemble Diatom Ribbons.
Inviting bassist Robert Hurst and drummer Johnathan Blake into her new trio, the American pianist decided to pay homage to some of the key women pianists in her career (Geri Allen, Carla Bley, Marilyn Crispell, Angelica Sanchez, Sylvie Courvoisier and Renee Rosnes), in an album that is a salve of inventiveness and imagination in the language of the piano trio.
Drawing inspiration from these six women, Kris Davis reinforces her claim as one of the most fascinating pianists in contemporary jazz, with her versatile resources and magnificent expressiveness.
