Challenged to present something new for Vossajazz 2019, the Norwegian guitarist Hedvig Mollestad chose to expand the explosive sound of his trio, located on a tangential point between jazz and rock. To broaden his sound, Mollestad decided to forego the bass, double the percussion and invited pianists Marte Eberson and Erlend Slettevoll plus trumpeter Susana Santos Silva (who he had met in Mats Gustafsson’s NU-Ensemble). For the new group, he also chose as inspiration the half woman and half serpent Greek mythological figure of Ekhidna, around which he develops themes linked to motherhood and the human difficulty of living in harmony with nature. The result is music that sounds as enigmatic as it is a doorway into collective revelations.
