Ten years on from the megalomaniacal initial formation of Fire! Orchestra, Mats Gustafsson and Johan Berthling once again brought together dozens of musicians to record the ambitious “Echoes”. The album, a must-have on many lists of the best of 2023, reflected – in Gustafsson’s words – the orchestra as “a more complex beast”. If “Echoes” admirably documents an exploration of ideas that travels as far as contemporary written music, improvised music or cosmic jazz, rock or traditional Brazilian and African music, this ambition is interpreted live by a super-formation of 16 members, including Julien Desprez, Susana Santos Silva and Fredrik Ljungkvist. Closing Jazz em Agosto 2024, an unmissable event.
