Faced with the remarkable originality of the music composed by Ches Smith for the project Clone Row, Marc Ribot ventured to write that it is like “listening to a Jim Hall concert under the influence of many mushrooms” or, alternatively, “a post-punk, post-Dave Brubeck, post-trip-hop experience with classical form”.

While Ches Smith’s talent as a drummer is widely recognised (Darius Jones, John Zorn, Tim Berne and many others), Clone Row is a dazzling demonstration of his superb imagination as a composer, channelled into this formation of two guitars, bass and electronics.

Disorienting music, in which each composition explores a new angle on how to brush against the different guitar styles of Mary Halvorson and Liberty Ellman.

An explosion of ideas.
