After an intense journey through Mexico, Valentin Ceccaldi, cellist and founder of the Bonbon Flamme collective, returned home with the desire to compose music nourished by everything he had absorbed: the vibrant colours of nature and the streets, the acidity of lemons, the sweetness of avocados, the fire of chillies, the omnipresence of violence and death, and the relationship with ancestors and religion.
All of this is present in the quartet’s second album, Calaveras y Boom Boom Chupitos. Joined by three other incendiary musicians (Luís Lopes, Etienne Ziemniak and Fulco Ottervanger), Ceccaldi leads music with “a vast palette of colours” that adds “atmospheric pieces, occasional childlike melodies and a touch of ragtime”, according to UK Jazz News.
Magnificently delirious.
