In one of the most beautiful and unusual albums of recent years, Bill Orcutt recorded himself playing four guitars, putting together a puzzle of various circular and minimalist registers on the electric guitar. The comparisons with Steve Reich, but also with works by Satie and Bach, were to follow, giving clues to the entry into a universe that multiplied Orcutt’s unique style by four and united the different interests that pushed him into music in the 1970s: punk and post-punk, the avant-garde jazz of Cecil Taylor and the Art Ensemble of Chicago. The desire to bring the disc to life on stage led Orcutt to assemble a magnificent quartet – which includes the talents of Ava Mendoza, Shane Parish and Wendy Eisenberg – with which he recreates his compositions and ventures into totally unknown territory.
