Founded in 2002 as an avant-rock trio, the Ahleuchatistas owe their name to the collision of two fundamental references: Charlie Parker’s Ah-Leu-Cha and the revolutionary Mexican Zapatistas.

The motto, they said, was to juxtapose social revolution and musical revolution. Of the original trio, only guitarist Shane Parish remains, and he’s currently joined by bassist Trevor Dunn (Electric Masada, Mr. Bungle) and drummer Danny Piechocki (Terms).

Long on John Zorn’s radar, the Ahleuchatistas are dedicated to an aesthetic that veers between math-prog and avant-prog, creating meticulously organised successive loops involving subtle polytonal melodies. Music as cerebral as it is playful, always intense, full of corners and edges.
