Southern Skimmer
Orthetrum brunneum
This species occurs from Mongolia to Western Europe and is also present in North Africa. In Portugal, it occurs throughout most of the mainland, with the exception of the northern coastal region, where no records exist. In Lisbon, it is relatively common and occasionally appears even in city gardens. The Southern Skimmer is known for colonising new habitats, favouring shallow watercourses with little or no aquatic vegetation, such as newly opened irrigation channels or run-off zones in construction areas.
