Red-veined Darter

Sympetrum fonscolombii

This species is distributed from South Africa to Asia and Europe. It is one of the most common dragonflies in Portugal, occurring everywhere from Minho to the Algarve. It is also present in the Azores and Madeira. It uses a wide variety of freshwater habitats to breed, such as dams, rivers, streams, ponds, fountains and garden lakes. This species is often spotted in the Gulbenkian Garden, especially during the migratory period between August and October.
