Migrant Hawker

Aeshna mixta

The Migrant Hawker is found in the Far East, North Africa, and much of Europe. It is well distributed throughout the Portuguese mainland. It breeds mainly in lakes and ponds with plenty of aquatic vegetation, including temporary ponds that only contain water from autumn to spring. With its strong capacity for dispersal, this species may be seen almost anywhere, chasing insects across grassy lawns and sunlit clearings in urban parks and gardens. In the Gulbenkian Garden, these dragonflies can be observed flying among the trees and over flowering shrubs.
