Fernando Lemos

Pôr do Sol (variante) [Sunset (variation)]

This image must be viewed alongside Pôr-do-sol (Sunset), given that it is a variation, as the title indicates, in which the location and time of day at which the photograph was taken are the same.

Because the location is unidentified by the artist, we are indeed unsure whether it relates to the representation of a sunset or a dawn, two titles attributed by Lemos to the image mentioned above.

In any case, the interesting aspects of this composition are its graphic nature and the dramatism that the low light lends to the people and objects on the street, recalling the studies by the German photographer Umbo (Otto Umbehr) in a group of images he named Unheimlich Strasse [Strange Street] (1928), calling attention to precisely the forms of the shadows of the pedestrians projected along the street.
