Between June and September 1996 the Modern Art Centre played host to a retrospective exhibition of the work of artist Gaëtan Lampo Martins de Oliveira (1944-2019). This exhibition focussed on his production on paper, specifically his self-portraits, and included works produced between 1981 and 1995.

It featured fifteen drawings, which occupied the lower level of the building, including two series from the CAM Collection – A arte da fuga – I – La chambre verte [The art of escape – I – The green room] and D’Après nature [After nature] – as well as loans from various national collections. The artist began to explore the theme of self-portraiture at the beginning of the 1980s and by the end of the decade practised this genre exclusively.

The catalogue that accompanied the exhibition reproduced all the drawings and featured an introduction by Jorge Molder (director of the CAM and one of the exhibition’s organisers) and an essay by Manuel Castro Caldas, together with a biography of the artist.
