The Family in the Garden is a group portrait of Andrews’ family, represented in the garden of the family home, in Norwich. The painting marks a suspended moment in an autobiographical fiction. Although technically very different from the main currents of British art at the time, Andrews' figuration places him somewhere between Lucian Freud’s hyperreal figuration (particularly in the family theme) and the painting of Frank Auerbach. The contrast between the realism in the treatment of the three figures in the centre and on the right, and the more expressionist representation of the female figure on the left - the artist's grandmother – shown in two different postures, is remarkable.
