German Dadaist Kurt Schwitters created Rudol 333 in Norway, his first country of refuge in his flight from Nazism as a so-called ‘degenerate’ artist, before a further flight to Britain a year later. A collage incorporating packaging (including the glue Rudol 333) and scraps of typed and handwritten letters it reflects his interest in typography and typifies his own idiosyncratic form of art: 'Merz' – a term derived from the name 'Kommerz-und-Privatbank', selected from a random scrap of newspaper to unite all aspects of his prolific output: painting, collage, sculpture, architecture, typography, poetry, drama, performance and happenings.
