For Julian Opie, everyday urban life is a fascinating world which offers a vast array of aesthetic and imagetic propositions. Through his work, the artist seeks to encourage observers to pay to mundane everyday elements the same attention they would payto the contemplation of artistic objects. With this, the artist aims to create zones of continuity between the artistic space and the surrounding urban reality.
Natalie Walking can be contextualized in a group of works begun in the 2000s, that approach the theme of the moving human figure, well loved in the history of art. Nevertheless, the use of a graphic language, that originates in the world of signage, and techniques such as LED and computer animation, used in advertising, offer a new perspective on this familiar theme. In this sculpture, the sparing representation of the figure, reduced to the bare essentials, contrasts with the more attentive treatment given to Natalie’s clothing, and the naturalism with which the motion of her walk is depicted.
