Antepassados

1966

Gallery

Antepassados is a series of paintings created in London between 1965 and 1966. These works mark a radical and unexpected shift in the artist's style, influenced by British neo-figuration, the life drawing classes she took at the Slade School of Fine Art, and her strong friendship with Paula Rego and Vic Willing. The title refers to the artist’s own ancestry, particularly her grandfather, General Óscar Carmona, the President of Portugal during Salazar's regime, addressing both her family's complex history and her country's political past.
