Valuing the Ocean

How Can Connecting and Collaborating Support Marine Conservation?

November 2019

Valuing the Ocean is a programme that is working towards the conservation and sustainable management of the ocean for the wellbeing of people now and in the future. It was set up by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (UK Branch) in 2013 with a focus on supporting collaboration across the marine conservation sector and communicating why the ocean matters.

Valuing the Ocean will continue until 2024, with a pivot to begin looking more internationally from 2019. Over the next five years, we want to build on what’s been working, embed new approaches and connect beyond the UK to benefit more widely and help in a global effort to create lasting change.

We have published this booklet at a moment of reflection as we move into a new phase of the programme to share what we’ve been doing and facilitate future collaboration. It outlines our approach and the work we have helped to develop with our networks since 2013, as well as our direction going forward.
