Location
Grand Auditorium Calouste Gulbenkian FoundationOne of the most popular works by Maurice Ravel, La Valse was written as a tribute to the Viennese waltzes honed to perfection by Johann Strauss II. Strauss was responsible for the popularity of the waltzes in the halls of the Austrian capital in the 19th century, which is why Ravel took him as the model for his own work, initially entitled Vienne. The composer’s plans were first unveiled in 1906, although La Valse was only completed in 1920. Lorenzo Viotti, who last season directed the Gulbenkian Orchestra and the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester in the Grand Auditorium, returns to conduct it.
