Wang Li and Wu Wei

The music of the Chinese duo, formed by Wang Li and Wu Wei, challenges the most creative of classification. Besides their instruments – the sheng, an ancient mouth blown free reed instrument; the jaw harp, one of the oldest known musical instruments; and the calabash flute, a Chinese vertical free reed flute, the duo also uses sounds extracted from their own bodies, promoting the practice of oriental instruments from a modern musical perspective. The tone seems to have been set by Wang Li’s reclusion for four years in a French monastery, indulging in an introspection that would find a perfect echo in the music that he would produce from then on.
