Samuel Barber, known especially for his Adagio for Strings, will forever be linked to the dramatic effect his music produces in Oliver Stone’s Platoon. But David Lynch had already used the piece before that in the final scene of Elephant Man, referring to it as “pure magic”, a “deeply spiritual and simply beautiful” piece. In this programme, the Adagio is set off by a vision of the future and echoes of the warlike past, by a suite of music by John Williams for the Star Wars sequel and by the overture The Year 1812 by Tchaikovsky, composed to commemorate the Defeat of Napoleon’s troops in Russia.
