Grand Auditorium Calouste Gulbenkian FoundationMozart’s Requiem is known to have been unfinished at the time of the composer’s death, as he had been unable to fully comply with the commission from Count Franz von Walsegg. While, on his own deathbed, Mozart composed the essence of one of the most memorable works in music history, almost a hundred years later, Gabriel Fauré managed to do the same without the usual motivation of a personal or close loss. According to the composer himself, the stimulus to write a Requiem emanated from the artistic challenge itself and the pleasure of creating a work dominated by religious and human faith in eternal rest.
