In a text which quickly became famous and an essential reading, András Schiff wrote in the English newspaper, The Guardian, about his relationship with Haydn’s work, describing him as “an astounding composer”. “The world needs to appreciate him much more: of all the really great composers, he is still the most underrated”. This uncompromising defence of Haydn, even proposing that programmes be made up exclusively of his symphonies, would also extend with great success to a series of lecture-recitals at the Wigmore Hall in London.
