Grand Auditorium Calouste Gulbenkian FoundationWhen, in 2010, David Afkham won the first edition of the Nestlé and Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award, directing the Gulbenkian Orchestra, there was no shortage of those who claimed to have witnessed the birth of a star. The following years confirmed this premonition, and Afkham is currently the principal conductor of the Spanish National Orchestra. Seduced by the energy he receives from an orchestra, Afkham says that conducting “is inexhaustible. It is intrinsically linked to my existence.” Under his strong leadership, the Gulbenkian Orchestra will play Mahler’s 2nd Symphony for the first time in its history.
