The Rite of Mountains is a work in which Guo Wenjing, possibly the most important living Chinese composer reflects on the earthquake that hit the Wenchuan area in 2008, exploring the relationship between the natural disaster and human life. It is Wenjing’s flagship piece, and will be played by Li Biao, one of the most talented and renowned of today’s Asian percussionists. In the second part, Muhai Tang will conduct Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony, in turn a testimony of an era of conflict and political and social change.
