António José Miranda

Violin

António José Miranda began studying violin at the age of eight at the Fundação Musical do Amigos das Crianças. Benefiting from a scholarship from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, he studied for three years at the Yehudi Menuhin International Academy in Gstaad, Switzerland, where he had the opportunity to be in contact with such masters as Yehudi Menuhin, Sandor Vegh, Robert Masters and Anna Chumachenko. He attended advanced and virtuosity studies for a year in Bern, with Daniel Zinman. He returned to Portugal in 1981, joining the Gulbenkian Orchestra the same year, after a public audition. In 1999 he obtained a Degree in Violin from the Escola Superior de Mùsica de Lisboa.

António José Miranda was also a violinist with Camerata Lyzy, with which he performed in such prestigious European venues as the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. He has taught in summer schools in Barcelona, Gstaad and Portugal (Gulbenkian Foundation, Estoril Music Festival and Casa de Mateus). He has also performed as a soloist with various national ensembles and orchestras and played on recordings and documentaries for radio and television. He has also given many recitals during his career in the Gulbenkian Museum and in a number of cities in Portugal. He performed in the International Festival of Macau (1992) and in five concerts in Expo ’98. In 1997 he recorded his first CD with the Portuguese guitar quartet Sons do Tempo, in which he played with the composer and guitarist António Eustáquio.
