2015 marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of one of Finland’s most distinguished composers, Jean Sibelius (born on 8 December 1865), celebrated on the same day as Finland’s National Day marking the country’s independence in 1917. Having started the year with a monumental set of recordings of Beethoven’s Piano Concertos, Norwegian Leif Ove Andsnes was chosen to pay tribute to Sibelius. He is a pianist of whom the New York Times says, «When he sits in front of the keyboard…extraordinary things happen».
