Liturgy of the Birds

Event Slider

Just as Stockhausen claimed that, with Messiaen, his former teacher, he had learned to “avoid birdsong”, so the composer himself who wrote some of the most beautiful pieces for church organ was not very devoted to jazz. Something that did not prevent the pianist and composer Daniel Bernardes from paying tribute to the author of “Quatuor pour la fin du temps” in a project that introduces within a jazzy frame the fascination that led him to listen to the “Sinfonia Turangalîla”.

For all intents and purposes, Olivier Messiaen was known for improvising on the organ during masses held at the Église de la Sainte Trinité in Paris. Bernardes even found a certain harmonic proximity to the paradigms of jazz, and that was what led him to make what was one of the albums of the year in 2019, “Liturgy of the Birds”. What does the music of Messiaen and jazz have in common? The use of ancient Greek modes. “This proximity to nature makes Messiaen’s harmonic language a possible path for contemporary jazz”, Daniel Bernardes argues, and the result of this conviction is what we will hear, with a jazz piano trio to be complemented by a proven percussion ensemble, the Drumming GP.
